The Tico Times
We made it to Costa Rica and have now claimed San Jose as our new home base! How exciting to finally cross into Central America and settle into a new city again.
Searching for an eccentric opportunity to get involved in lead me to The Tico Times, Central America's English language newspaper. Everything happened so fast with the application and interview. Now I'm eagerly looking forward to the end of the year when I'll be joining the team as a photography intern from September to December. Such an interesting experience and great way to get to know this country up close! I've always wanted to explore photojournalism and it's going to be especially rewarding to learn from the pros who work at the TT. Just having a dose of structure in my photography thanks to deadlines, writers, and editors is going to be a good challenge, too.The paper is published weekly and has a large following not just here, but outside of Costa Rica. The staff is small, friendly, young, and driven. And the internship is offered 3 times a year for aspiring writers and photographers, exposing them to what its like to pitch story ideas, meet weekly deadlines, and learn what it's like to work in a professional newsroom.
Stories will focus on anything from business, political, and environmental pieces as well as hotel, hostel, and restaurant reviews. Plus every once in a while there will be a full page or 2 page spread solely dedicated to photo essays. Qué fantas-TICO!
